Wow what an abysmal start.
Everyone says on line gaming is Soo easy, and it isn’t a problem. Well we proved the public relations we have been hearing wrong last night.
Now being critical as I am I also understand that my intelect as to regard to IT and communication is very Ham fisted. Yes I like the terms plug and play because I am becming inherntaly lazy as I age when it comes to communications systems. Why are our third and fourth generation devices becoming so dificult to use. I am sure we can all look to the past to our basic pixel cell phones that we “talked” to people on and swore we had no problems with them… we probably didn’t. Si why are we getiing blueberry phones with buttons the size of the end profile of a Tic Tac? Crickey I know the human race is growing bigger in stature ( and weight, yes me too) but surley this is just plain idiotic. I tried to press one letter twice so as to get a capital… you known it ther appears one of evey six letters surrounding it! Ergonics encountered the accountant .. and the accountant won. I just hope when ther is a good company that produces acceptale equipment and software that they whipe the market with thier briliance.
Anyways…. Michael and I trialled setting up a on line WWII game with an older title of software. It is Operation overlord and it is about probably 8 years old.
It is a terrific game and the communication options to play againsta human advasary are Email and TCP/IP. Now I’m such a luddite that I still don’t even know what TCP/IP means nor even if I am typing the accronym correctly. ( Don’t get me started on accronum’s I could pull that apart as well… but LLTFADSW?)
We run the game and followed the instructions which say blah blah very easy… great! didd that, clicked that,.. the nothing.
Hmmm read the instructions.. hah! says here.. if your connected to a router you will get a 198.162.xxx.xxx or some such IP address… Yeas , Yeas .. that’s me! Then says.. ” if so it won’t work” …. what!!!!
Turns out you have to log into your modem and then thell you modem which computer in the house local network is using a port number 7204 or somthing… what a load of bullshit!
ell that was too hard.. so we went to email…. poor michael had three user accounts running on the PC simultaniously… so this meant when he made a game file for posting as an email.. it saved it in someone elses directories… so he thought the software was broken until he found it of course.
Anyhow we have it running by email.. After three or more hours Ithink we have had one turn each… WTF?
Technology is Bullshit! Why can’t routers and modems be more simple?
However my first turn has been returned this morning! My G Micheal did you do that while wearing PJ’s and eating breakfast? Now my whole working day is on tenderhooks.
So my SHerman tanks are up against Tigers apparently… this is new for me, fighting the good kitchen appliances with tinfoil tanks… lets hpe my little ants have Swiss army knives with tin openers?
Bye bye for now
Martin
That’s why these days people use consoles or company’s set up networks like battlenet to manage all that complexity for you. The problem is you’re you’re trying to play a game that was designed to be played on a Local Area Network (like your network at work) over the internet.
Your router has a single IP and all your connections in and out of your Local Area Network to the internet are getting managed by your router, the same goes for Potts. For your machines to target each other you need to tell your routers what is being sent where. It’s really kinda common sense.
Alternatively you could pay for an additional IP to assign to your PC or use something like No-IP, router firewalls notwithstanding.
Anyway good to see you’re walking a mile in my shoes. Sherman/Cromwell vs Tiger is not a pretty picture.
After a few turns it looks like Mr Potter may have lost a few tanks too early. However ther has been no sign of his artillery and no sign of his infantry in any form of strength.
Assuming he is using a strict combined arms strategy I expect to see some fast tanks moving to range shots in support of infantry in close proximity to a heavy tank or two.
My infantry are making headway but keeping low.
Half of my fast tanks Stuarts have been destroyed but the other two have penetrated the line and are looking to go gun hunting.
Enjoyable game so far. Email definatly gives you time to think and deploy.
Good game to start on.. with a good cross section of vehicles.. which is probably standard fr UK. Nice to see a puma and some 8 wheel RAD AC’s on the other side of the field.
Me sextons made a good mobile AT gun and are not in close support role yet.
Heres to a better week, cheers, or tally ho
Sounds exciting. I had a look the other day. I have Afrika Corps Beyond Overlord. Which I assume is the same game just a later version?
Yes it is. I have afrika too but cannot find it. I think it is in another CD case somewhere.
However the opportunities to play Firestorm by mail or TP/IP are very good.
Martin, I have been slack on the email game. I received so many reinforcements I don’t know where to put them all 🙂 You may own your left flank (there is nothing on that flank so knock yourself out) but I control the other flank as seen by your destroyed Shermans. True I lost a few tanks but a happy scarifice to get my infantry in position. I didn’t realise how exposed my anti-tank gun was until almost all your tanks opened up on it. Still a close game and with my additional reinforcements (I was worried about my lack of tanks left) and the destruction of your tanks I am feeling confident that I will win.
Laugh it up…. I’m due massive air support any turn now….
Youcan’t hide from a typhoon with a cool methodical Kiwi at the controls.
P.s I think I might be due some churchill reinforcments too… maybe even a pet crocodile or two.
yay for the typhoons!!
I finally found this game, that is the original beyond overlord one (already had found the afrika korps game)
Great !!!
Your in… design your senario,
Then help us set up TCp/IP stuff…..
OK last night my Britishe armoured company had it ass finally kicked so hard that they surrendered.
I learn’t the finer points of a creeping artillery barage and also:
how AT guns and crews are brittle;
tanks can be killed by 150mm artillery;
that a panzershreck has more chance of killing a crocodile than a Pz IV;
that panzergrenadiers charging in on half tracks are really really fast;
Right shall we all make a scenario each and try playing two games each at a time?
