Wood Elf Glade Guard (Archers)

These are twelve of the twenty four archers you get in a wood elf battalion box.  They’re from a second hand battalion box that was purchased so long ago I’ve forgotten.  The box was pretty much as new except that all the sprues had been spray painted matt black.  I prefer to clean and assemble the minatures before spraying them and this was a good reminder as to why.  The mould lines were sprayed over making them difficult to see.  The parts of the model that needed to be glued were covered in paint making them poor surfaces to fix and thus needed to be scraped.  The minatures still needed to be clipped from the sprues and then cleaned up.  All of which meant that most of the paint needed to be scraped off.

Anyway painted the cavalry and the dryads a long time ago (see previous blog posts).  I was going to do all twenty four but just couldn’t bring myself to bite off so many and ended up doing only half of them.  My own colour scheme, not totally convinced by it which is why I almost always follow Games Workshop colour scheme.  They do rank up a little better than they are in the picture although I’ve had to number them because they do rank up only one way.

More Glade Guard

These two are examples of the woodelves first plastic kit (I think).  All are styled rather boringly in the exact same pose, as was the way back then.  On the upside they rank beautfifully, no fluffing around trying to make the bows and whatnot tuck into the personal space of the model in front.  I have two boxes each containing an annoying eight models (units are now 10+ elves).  So sixteen in total.  One box is painted with the green cloaks the other box with brown cloaks, hence I’ve only bothered to shows examples of each, since they really are all exactly the same.  These are again my own colour scheme, the ones on the box had yellow tunics and red bows and looked rather awful so I thought I couldn’t do much worse myself.  The hardest thing to do was the eyes as they have quite narrow faces that are heavily cowled.  I was pretty good at doing eyes back then (unlike now) but these were quite a trial.  I also have two additional metal figures holding sword and bow (similar to the other glade guard with the stripey trousers) painted in the respective colour schemes to bolster the units out too nine each.

Glade Guard / Archers

Five of a unit of ten Glade Guard, or what were more commonly referred to as Archers back in the day… and glade guard were spearmen.  But hey no point being picky.

What can I say.  I actually really like this unit, they’re metal for one so there’s some decent heft to them.  And my painting scheme (and this is one of the rare occassions when it really is MY painting scheme, not diligently plagerised from Games Workshop) is well, not to bad I think.  From their blue velour tunics to their pinstriped breeches.  I think they’re cool even if the technical aspect of the paint job is only passable.
