Great Eagles

These are my two Great Eagles. Purchased way back when the 4th edition woodelf army book came out these used to be a staple in every army. However when they moved to being a rare choice and had to compete with treeman and waywatchers for the slots they stopped being an automatic choice. When I painted them I was very happy with them though they look a bit old and tired now. This was not helped by lending them briefly to a local gaming store who wanted great eagles for something and new I had some. They came back with their wings and stands broken. I repaired them but it’s never quite the same again. If you look close to the swooping one you can see the fracture line around the wing has started to open up again. It’s also not really helped by being on these tiny bases which are too small to support such a large model. They frequently topple over further damaging the models. I’m going to buy some of the new wide bases, or place the stems of the stands (which I have plenty of) into 40mm monster bases like the warhawks that I have. Then at some point I’ll probably strip them pull them apart, reassemble and paint them again. Whether or not they’re effective in 8th edition I don’t know but certainly finding room for them in the army when they only cost 50pts is not much of a problem. But hey … do I look like I care?

More Glade Guard

These two are examples of the woodelves first plastic kit (I think). All are styled rather boringly in the exact same pose, as was the way back then. On the upside they rank beautfifully, no fluffing around trying to make the bows and whatnot tuck into the personal space of the model in front. I have two boxes each containing an annoying eight models (units are now 10+ elves). So sixteen in total. One box is painted with the green cloaks the other box with brown cloaks, hence I’ve only bothered to shows examples of each, since they really are all exactly the same. These are again my own colour scheme, the ones on the box had yellow tunics and red bows and looked rather awful so I thought I couldn’t do much worse myself. The hardest thing to do was the eyes as they have quite narrow faces that are heavily cowled. I was pretty good at doing eyes back then (unlike now) but these were quite a trial. I also have two additional metal figures holding sword and bow (similar to the other glade guard with the stripey trousers) painted in the respective colour schemes to bolster the units out too nine each.

Eternal Guard / Spearelves

Five of my ten spearelves, formerly called glade guard and now I guess called eternal guard. Anyway nomenclature aside these are another unit I’ve always been fond of though they always done poorly on the battlefield. When I bought them back in fourth edition ten man units weren’t so silly of course now they’re somewhat useless. I’ve been meaning to purchase some eternal guard and using these guys to bulk them up but just haven’t got around to it. With 8th edition’s emphasis on ranked infantry though I might have to rethink that, since my combat phase has until now relied on wardancers and dryads both of whom skirmish and as such have been left looking in through the window of the candy store whilst all the other infantry types got goodies handed out to them. Not that they won’t be useful of course just will have to use them differently.

Anyway that aside the spearevles paint scheme was copied from GW’s I think with some guesswork involved in places. I really like the colour scheme (even if it is a bit Australian), again they’re metal so feel good too. The sculpts are a bit of a mix but pretty indicative for the period (mid nineties). Painted such beautiful flawless smooth yellow shields I’ve been too scared to decorate them with a motif (and thus undoubtedly ruin them), have no decals for them either. A fine example of my drybrush everything painting style at the time. I noticed on some of these photos I wasn’t even very careful about it, or at least didn’t touch up afterwards. Bad me, you don’t really notice though since the models are mostly green cloaks and yellow shields.
