Devlan Mud alternative wash

A apparently you cannot get the Devlan mud wash anymore I looked for an alternative and this little recipe was found at

I like the sound of it.

I remember some years back chatting to a guy at polytech who painted heaps of 1/72 scale soldiers and often would over coat them in PVA glue. I was skeptical but apparently it made the paint stay.

The washes we had from GW flowed well and dried well… so I suspect this recipe will work.

All I need to to get some Matt medium.

…my “devlan mud” style wash is:
3 drops elmer’s(PVA glue)
10 drops matte medium
5 drops water
10 drops brown ink
1 drop black ink…

Edit: 18th October.

I have been looking to make up some more Devlan Mud wash as it is so good I have been using it all up.
However one ingredient is horribly expensive.
Brown ink. Once the colour used by financial auditors in the ledgers it has fast gone out of vouge in the stationary market. You can’t buy big bottles of it. You can only get little 25ml bottles for a reasonably high price.

So I have decided to make an alternative. I will be trying it out soon.

Instead of 10 drops of brown ink I will try using Burnt sienna dye or dye powder in the mix.
Dye is very strong in colour and depending on how you dilute it you can change its properties.
I bought some FAS dye for about $12 and this is enough to make. A 30gm bottle of dye looks to be about enough to make 7 cups of dye for art purposes. So may make about 5 cups of ink substitute.
It’s also Kiwi made and that’s cool.
SO $12 for about 7 x 250ml Burnt sienna dye or $12 for 15ml of W&N brown ink.
I will use the last of my first batch and do a comparison on a texture soon.

If only Willy could save all these Orcs?

Last weekend I decided to get a wriggle on and get some more figures .. mostly done.

I wanted to do something quick and Orcs seem to be easy to paint.. and they are.

These are not highlighted but seriously some of them don’t need it.

Many have no weapon as these are all second hand figs that I have stripped , re primed and now painted.

There are others that need arms sculpted on and I have decided to do that later… crazy I know.. but I wanted it now…

Anyways… on with he pictures.. as per usual..
Hand weapon and shield warriors group 1

Hand weapon and shield warriors group 2

Spear armed warriors group 3

Two handed weapon warriors group 4

two handed weapon warrior, Spear armed warriors (Spear fixed up by adding a blade so could be a two handed weapon or spear really. The third one needs arms added and weapon as conversion)

These three are really interesting… these are Uruk-Hai. I trimmed off the big engineers helmets and segmented armour to make them look like leather bodice, two of them need weapons added. I may beat some copper wire flat to make crude swords..thats another article.

Two handed weapon warrior fixed up to make as a spear

Flash mob photo…

There you have it 24 Orcs… is that 2 Dozen or a a pod?
Now all I nee is a little Hobbit.. called Willy maybe even…

one eyed Willey … Goonies. One eyed Willey you remember him don't you?

Operation “Get Cracking!” pt 5

Dear Diary,
this weekend has been a real blast… I set out knowing I was going to succeed.. but the realities of all this painting work has just blown my mind.

Yup the “wonder wash” lived up to it’s reputation.
However I must make a note that if i am to use it again I shall use a tone lighter than the required. Because it can make thinks a little darker than expected.

Anyways… I did a brown was.. followed by a black wash.. which I used Vellajo paint with not Tamiya black. Because it makes that awful watermark thing… but the floor polish does go a long way to remove that problem when mixed 50/50 with the water.

Anyways the final layer was some pink wash on the faces and hands.. over did it on some but most look remarkably better with some flushed tone.

So here is some pics.. any ways..

Here is a shot of the whole lot. This is one full platoon. But i have made two platoon command stands. Which lets me make two 3/4 size platoons or enough command to drop an air mission.
