Tomb Kings

Over two years since I posted last. While I’ve not posted much… at all, I have remained busy painting. Creating a post for every image describing how I painted it, my thoughts on the model etc is a stretch particularly given I painted some of these a while ago.

One of the painting projects I began and completed? over the last year was a Tomb King army for my friend Mat who is a big tomb kings fan.

Settra the Imperishable

The flagship model of the army. This is the resin version and has a number of imperfections, bubbles and some slightly bent/warped bits. Fixed some of the bubbles but was not game to heat and bend the model given it’s not very cheap. For the base I tried to emulate a dried river bed. Badass model, love to see GW create a new sculpt, he’s such a good character.

High Queen Khalida

Most recent models. Liked the look of a pale flat colour for her mask rather than gold which can be a bit dark if heavily inked or bright and shiny. Went with a pale blue to tie into the whole blue theme. Some imperfections in the staff on the snake. Thought I’d done a better job fixing that until I started painting it. Anyway nice model, shame about the left hand, whats going on there? Presumably one of those foam sports supporters hands for cheering on Settra. Maybe should have painted it accordingly.

Warsphinx / Royal Warsphinx

My first model in the collection. This was an overpaint (not bad base coat/colours) and I think the first model in the collection. This is the hero mount version with a Tomb King/Prince riding it.

Necrosphinx

Tried something different with the Necrosphinx. Based coated a deep blue then sponged on various shades of light blue (not particularly obvious in this image), following that painted on lines to represent the seams in marble. A bit of an experiment which turned out pretty well. Had to rebuild scorpion on head (tail from another little scorpion) and prism/mirror thing (also on head), also tip of one of his big blades.

Casket of Souls

Liche Priest has a bit of a lean. Again not game enough with the cost of these models to heat them up. Built up a base as a small hill to try to give the model a bit more height and gravitas in the army, as it deserves.

Tomb Scorpion

A Chinese resin copy. Had a number of imperfections and I note the resin copies are particularly fragile as such the legs on this were tricky. Still came out looking ok.

Bone Giant

Another resin copy. Would have liked to build in a more dynamic pose the but the fragility of the resin meant that it would have required a lot of greenstuff and sculpting to make that work. Not super confident with greenstuff beyond small fixes so after advice from Mat went with the following pose.

Ushabti

Again resin copies, and again very brittle and warped. Also the sizes are a little off from what I imagine the originals were like. Still painted up nice enough.

Chariots

Six chariots, all overpainted, and some have a bit of gunk build up which gave some interesting… corroded metal effects? Probably should have stripped them. Had to make up some of the crews from bits. A seventh kit-bashed chariot came with the others clearly made from the howdah of a warsphinx, modeled here with a surplus standard bearer in it.

Skeleton Horsemen

Sixteen cavalry, again overpaints and again had to assemble complete the number with bits.

Skeleton Warriors / Archers

Thirty five spearmen and twenty archers. I think about five or so of those spearmen have only one arm and there are an additional eleven skeletons with combinations of one arm (standard, sword, horn) or no arms, waiting to find some spare bits.
