Skaven Rat Ogre

Skaven Rat Ogre, or at least one of the two from the Island of Blood box set.  Relatively straight forward but for the copious flesh colour which can be tricky.  Not sure I did the best job of it but it’s good enough.  Deviated from the translucent skin effect that the GW painters employed showing raw muscle and sinew.  I didn’t really think about it until I checked the book later and went “oh yeah” but by then it was too late.  Good thing too because not sure my skills were up to it.  The black fur in the photo looks a bit ‘not painted’ it’s less so in real life but you do get that general impression.  Might have to highlight more with blue or grey.  I don’t like painting a lot of black for that reason, probably should have gone for brown fur.

  1. I suppose this was perhaps an easier Skaven to paint.. as it has a lot of flesh tone. The one thing that interests me about this mini is .. is it supposed to a Frankenstein rat? As it seems to appear to be stitched together? I would expect the flesh around such drastic surgery to be scared heavily and not still chastised. Unless those stitches are metallic or heavy linen. I would see some gore-sh colours on those stich joints..as I can only guess that they may not be the cleanest f woulds with an ogre rat?
I would have added some Tin Bitz dry brush to the metal Armour to age it a little.
Otherwise your painting skill is still as perfect as usual.

  2. hmmmm not sure I agree about him being easier. For my part I prefer fur and robes, flesh is not the easiest colour to paint particularly in such expanse.
Yes I believe rat ogre’s are indeed frankenstein rats and certainly that is the effect the sculpture has gone for.
You could be right, there were moments when I felt that the flesh near the stitching should have been more necrotised however trying to paint that on and not obscure the contrasting fur, stitches and flesh was proving tricky (it kinda looked like I’d made mistakes rather than what I was trying to achieve) so I gave up. There is a little bit or redish brown and pink around the would be wounds.
Yeah I think the stitches are meant to be something like linen or metal, it’s not natural scarring as they’re very regular. Probably would have been better if it had been a darker colour but again you loose the contrast and mute the detail. That said I have another one I might try with that.
Awww you wound me, the armour is aged. I used a blue wash a green wash a brown wash and a black wash in various layers to achieve it rather than tin bitz. I guess it might be still a little sharp, ie it’s not rusted to crap, but I didn’t think it was too bad.
I’ll take what you’ve said on board and will think harder about my choices in future. lol
